CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling is not publicly fighting Mayor Johnson's decision to get rid of ShotSpotter gunshot detection equipment in the City. But, he still seems to be a fan of the technology.
At Wednesday’s City Council hearing on summer preparedness, 17th Ward Ald. David Moore asked Superintendent Larry Snelling a question about ShotSpotter. Mayor Johnson is ending the contract with the parent company SoundThinking. He asked if Snelling still favored ShotSpotter as a needed tool.
Snelling replied he feels the same as before.
“The technology has allowed us to get to jobs quicker,” Snelling said. “We’ve had nearly 500 life-saving events or at least where officers rendered aid to people when they got on the scene. And, that’s truly important.”
Moore is spearheading an uphill effort to allow some wards to keep ShotSpotter if they want.
