
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago School Board is expected to approve a name change for Andrew Jackson Language Academy.
The Local School Council at Andrew Jackson held a series of meetings about renaming the school, because of Jackson’s ownership of slaves and his advocacy for the removal of native Americans.
Andrew Jackson Language Academy's Local School Council ultimately voted unanimously to rename the school. The Board of Education plans to finalize the change at its monthly meeting Wednesday.
The new name will be Chicago World Language Academy.
A Sun Times analysis of school names found there are 30 named for slaveholders.
Jackson will be the first to be changed.
Dozens of other school names have connections to racist ideology, and more changes are expected.
