(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For more than 44 years, the Crisis Line of Will and Grundy counties has taken calls from people who need help. Now, just after Thanksgiving the Crisis Line will be ending.

“The sad part about it is, it is such a terrible time to have this happen because COVID is affecting everybody,” Executive Director Michele Batara told WBBM Newsradio on Thursday.

She’s been with the Crisis Line for 22 years. It handles more than 30,000 calls annually.

“You know, we’ve worked really hard to continue to try to keep it open, but we have struggled for many, many years.  And we have been at this door many times and seemed to pull it out. And this time we just couldn’t do it,” Batara said.

Much of the reason for closing down the Crisis Line comes down to a shortage of grant money, she said.

After Nov. 30, calls will still get answered but not by a local person who likely will be familiar with the programs available to residents.
