CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The CTA’s big Red Line extension project is getting some help from the Biden administration.

This week, the White House announced 14 large transit projects in 11 states and the CTA’s more than $3.5 billion red line project has been recommended to receive $350 million.

The plan is to extend the Red Line more than five miles to the Far South Side and includes four new accessible stations. The project will provide a new, more direct connection to downtown through the Red Line, which means an easier trip and less time commuting, according to CTA.

“Today, we are one step closer to groundbreaking in 2025 and we thank U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg for including this equity project in the budget recommendation heading to Congress, as well as the Illinois delegation for their continued support of this vital project," CTA President Dorval Carter said in a statement.

The recommendation now heads to Congress.
