CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The CTA’s move to an all-electric fleet of buses is getting a boost from $25 million in federal funding.

The U.S. Department of Transportation grant will help the CTA upgrade the substation at 95th Street. The agency plans to install six chargers at the station that serves 26,000 passengers on 16 different bus routes each weekday.

Last month, the CTA began electric service on the South Side on the number 63 bus as part of its conversion to an all-electric fleet. President Dorval Carter Jr. said the plan is to prioritize communities that have been historically dealing with poor air quality.
