CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Business was booming at a Pilsen bakery this afternoon after it was hit by vandals just last week.

The messages ranged from “Sell outs” to “Gentrifiers” at Bittersweet Pastry Shop and Café, which opened earlier this year at 2019 South Laflin after years in Lakeview.

Those messages are now gone, but customers like Kara Mitchell are not.

“They’re still busy," she said. "Lots of people today. We’re going to keep supporting them.”

"It’s not the attention we were hoping for our grand opening, but we’re so grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve received from the community, our guests, and the culinary community in Chicago and beyond," the bakery owners said in a statement.

They also called the vandalism “disappointing,” but have vowed to beef up security at the bakery and to continue working with Pilsen to get acclimated to the area.

"It's sad to see. You don't want any business here to feel unwelcome, so I'm glad that they're staying strong," Mitchell said.

“People will rally around them. I know I will, and I hope more businesses come to Pilsen."
