(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Officers with Customs and Border Protection working at O’Hare arrested more than 100 people wanted for various crimes over the past eight months.

Customs and Border Protection said some were attempting to flee the country and others were arrested as they arrived. All those arrested were wanted for crimes that include murder, sexual assault, child pornography, and drugs and weapons charges.

The Director of Field Operations in Chicago, LaFonda Sutton-Burke, said the “officers have the responsibility to identify wanted fugitives at ports of entry.”

CBP uses the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and cross reference active arrest warrants with the manifests of departing and arriving passengers.

“Our officers are always on alert for those who are fleeing the country to avoid prosecution,” said Shane Campbell, Area Port Director for Chicago in a statement.

“The use of a law enforcement databases, like NCIC, and intelligence by CBP officers is extremely instrumental in the apprehension of wanted criminals.”
