Defense wins Day 1 of Bears minicamp, as Caleb Williams continues to learn

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Day One of mandatory minicamp is over for the Chicago Bears. It was, in the words of a very loud Bears defender, a "butt-whooping" — only, he didn't say "butt."

Quarterback Caleb Williams had some positive moments, especially early on, with some half-speed passes to all of his first-team receivers: DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Cole Kmet and Keenan Allen. But he also threw a really bad interception right into the hands of safety Kevin Byard.

Head Coach Matt Eberflus immediately shrugged it off.

"Those are the experiences that he has to go through," Eberflus said. "He has to go through his progressions, which he did.

"He was right on his progressions, and then he took a hitch, and the ball should've come out, and he took two hitches, and it was late over the middle. That's always dangerous when you do that, but that's the learning experience and the process that a young quarterback has to go through, you know."

After the play, Williams went straight over to Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron to dissect the mistake, then left that discussion with a thumbs-up and an understanding. The Bears have praised Williams' learning ability since the day he was drafted.
