(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The son of the former CEO of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her doctor and University of Chicago Medicine following her death last year.

Ruth Colby died last October at the age of 69 following complications from a surgical procedure performed at the University of Chicago Medical Center three weeks earlier.

The lawsuit said her doctor recommended a minimally invasive robotic heart valve procedure.  It added that, following the lengthy procedure, Colby was unable to transition off of bypass and suffered severe heart failure.

“Our expert report states that Ms. Colby underwent the wrong procedure which was negligently performed,” attorney Keith Hebeisen said in a statement.

“We intend to get to the bottom of what happened because Ms. Colby did everything as she was advised and relied on this hospital and its doctor to properly treat her condition without her dying.”

Colby was CEO of Silver Cross Hospital for six years and seen by the community as a “visionary leader,” the Clifford Law Offices said.
