(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The unanimous vote to censure DeKalb City Clerk Sasha Cohen followed a contentious city council meeting on Monday.
Members of the City Council said Cohen missed numerous meetings since he was elected in 2021. In 2022, alone, City Manager Bill Niklas said Cohen missed 23 of the 26 meetings through Nov. 28, 2022.
"You have taken the taxpayers' trust, you have taken the city's trust — everyone who supported you — and you have walked all over it," said Ald. Carolyn Morris.
Ald. Scott McAdams said Cohen should return the salary he's earned since he was elected:
"Our taxpayers work too hard for their money to give it to a grifter," McAdams said.
Cohen ran unopposed in the April 2021 election. He's affiliated with the Vermin Supreme Institute, which is named after a Massachusetts performance artist who has been a perennial candidate in numerous elections.
He said he's still committed to the job.
"I definitely consider myself the city clerk and continue to assert that role and responsibility," Cohen said.
Cohen is currently suing the City of DeKalb, after officials denied him access to accept nominating petitions for the upcoming election.
