(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Democratic National Convention has brought an early – and very limited – reopening of the express lanes on the Kennedy this week.

Construction equipment that has been working in the reversible lanes for months has been cleared away for now.

IDOT says in a statement to WBBM it has “provided some availability for security purposes,” but the agency says the express lanes are not open to the general public in either direction during the convention.

There’s no lane markings or signs, but state troopers have been posted near the exits to ensure easy access for dignitaries attending the DNC.

IDOT says this phase of its three year construction project is on schedule to be finished this fall. Lane markings and signs are required before the express lanes are reopened beyond an extremely limited use.
