CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Democratic National Convention delegates are starting to leave Chicago today and they’re leaving with good vibes about their presidential ticket and the city of Chicago. WBBM Newsradio talked with a few of them at Midway Airport.
“The convention was nothing short of amazing,” said Daryl Parks, a Democratic National Convention delegate who was returning home to Tallahassee, Florida to campaign for Kamala Harris and other Democrats.
Other delegates had nothing but positive things to say, not only about the convention, but about Chicago and its people.
Patrick McGill of Washington D.C. sampled some of the great food, biked along the lakefront and went to Wrigley Field.
“An amazing city,” McGill said. “I had gone to the convention in 2012 in Charlotte and that city could barely handle all the incoming people from around the country. Chicago handled it without a hiccup.”
Delegate Juanita Martinez is from Eagle Pass, Texas, a key point in the immigration debate and she wanted to thank Chicago for its hospitality.
“I just want to send out a big ol’ thank you. Thank you. We’ll be back. We’ll be back just to visit,” said Martinez.
San Antonio, Texas delegate Richard Gonzalez also loved the weather. He said he’s going back to triple digit temps.
“The deep dish pizza was outstanding. We had that on Sunday. Then, we also had the Chicago hotdogs at Portillo’s,” Gonzalez says.
Delegate Nancy Young of southern California called the convention “an absolute, awesome experience.” She also wants to return to Chicago as a tourist.
“It’s a beautiful city. It’s my first time,” Young said. “ I’m well-traveled but this is my first time in Chicago. I didn’t have a whole lot of time to sight-see, but we were kind of downtown near the river. I’d like to come back and just visit the city,” said Young.
Other delegates left with similar impressions of the city, including Daryl Parks of Tallahassee, Florida.
“I love Chicago. Chicago in the summer. Nothing short of amazing. Doesn’t get much better than this.”
