(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Parents and activists gathered outside City Hall to demand officials keep mask and vaccine mandates in place for the Chicago Public Schools.

Twelve-year-old CPS student Antonio Breed joined his mom to say that COVID is not over for him, despite being vaccinated and boosted, nor for unvaccinated students. Masking in the classrooms needs to continue for the rest of the school year, he said.

Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez said it isn’t just a Chicago issue. He says officials across the state need to ignore political concerns and protect the health of those who cannot protect themselves.

He has sponsored an ordinance pressuring the City to do more to get people vaccinated.

CPS parent Jesù Estrada, leader of a higher education teachers union, said Black and Brown students stand to lose the most under relaxed COVID restrictions.

The Chicago Teachers Union and CPS had negotiated an agreement to keep the indoor mask mandate through the current school year. Many school districts have recently gone “mask optional.”
