Drama company finds new home at Irving Park theater

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After suffering through a pandemic, flood and most recently a fire, Invictus Theatre Company was looking for a new home for its upcoming season.

“One of our advisory board members had mentioned the Windy City Playhouse,” said Charles Askenaizer, founder and artistic director of Invictus Theatre Company. “We reached out and started talking and from that conversation, it grew into us signing a lease on the space.”

The Irving Park venue went on the market last April, leaving many to wonder if live shows would ever return.

The theater will be a major upgrade from the company’s previous setup.

“It's a much bigger space than what we're used to,” he said. “We're going from a 30-seat, small, little black box to now a 100- to 150-seat theater.”

Still, he said, the 2024 season will hold true to its intimate reputation.

“We've become known for people coming to see these powerful works in a very intimate space,” Askenaizer said. “We're like those Michelin restaurants that only have like five tables, so it's a very intimate experience, but you get to be right up close and personal with the action and the chef, so to speak.”

Invictus Theatre Company’s upcoming productions include Tracy Letts’ “August: Osage County,” Suzan-Lori Parks’ “Topdog/Underdog” and William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”
