CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A driver has died following an overnight, chain-reaction crash on the Eisenhower Expressway.

Illinois State Police said the fatal four-car accident occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. in the outbound lanes of I-290, at Homan.

It began when a car attempting to move into the left-center lane side-swiped another vehicle. The impact caused the first car’s driver to lose control, causing to skid across the road, all the way into the right lane. It was then struck by another car and ended up rolling over, on top of a vehicle parked on the right-shoulder. It's unclear why the fourth vehicle was sitting on the shoulder.

The driver of the parked car died at the scene. The victim's identification has not yet been released.

Driver of the initial car, along with its two passengers were sent to an area hospital with unknown injuries. Drivers of the second and third vehicle involved refused medical attention.

The expressway was shut down for several hours as ISP’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated.
