WEST DUNDEE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A double semi tractor-trailer crash in the northwest suburbs has left one driver dead.

According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal accident occurred at around 7:40 a.m., at the intersection of Miller Road and Illinois Route 31.

A Freightliner semi was headed east on Miller Road and approaching Route 31 while another semi, a Mack, was going south on Route 31.

The Mack driver told police he had the right of way at the stop sign, but the driver of the other semi blew the stop sign.

The sheriff’s office said both semis then collided, resulting in the Mack to veer off the road and land in a field east of Route 31. The Freightliner, carrying sand, rolled and stopped at the north shoulder of Route 31.

The driver of the Freightliner was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police said, and was thrown from the cab. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver, identified as 60-year-old David Ortiz of Streamwood, suffered critical injuries and was transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital.

Authorities will not identify the deceased driver until the next of kin are identified and the performance of an autopsy.

Due to the investigation and cleanup, Route 31 remains shutdown between Longmeadow Parkway and Main Street.
