DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Halloween is almost here and if parents plan on taking kids trick-or-treating in DuPage County, there’s one thing they’ll want to know ahead of time.
DuPage County is encouraging parents to download the OffenderWatch Family Safety App, which is a free app partnered with law enforcement to inform parents regarding registered sex offenders, find sex offenders near
them, and track their children while they are trick-or-treating.
The app can be downloaded from Apple App Store or
Google Play Store.
“Registered sex offenders report their home address to us. If you are going trick-or-treating, visit our website to see whose door you don’t want to knock on,” said Sheriff James Mendrick in a statement.
He encouraged parents to to search for sex offenders on their trick-or-treat route and near any addresses where their children spend time and do the same if they plan to take their children trick-or treating in a family member or friend's neighborhood, so they know ahead of time which houses should be avoided.
There are approximately 410 registered sex offenders in DuPage County.
