(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Parents of Huntley High School students have been warned about an outbreak of E. coli at the northwest suburban school.
The warning came from the McHenry County Health Department and Huntley High School. Officials issued a joint letter, which informed parents that five people at the school have come down with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.
The bacteria can cause some very severe symptoms of diarrhea and or vomiting, and officials said those symptoms can last five to 10 days.
McHenry County health officials said the department is still investigating the source of the outbreak, as well as which common exposures were touched by the people who contracted the illness.
Parents were asked in the letter to keep any students who have exhibited symptoms of E. coli to keep those students home for at least 48 hours after the symptoms go away.
