EVERGREEN PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man is in custody following the fatal shooting of a female employee inside a southwest side grocery store.

Shortly before 9:15 a.m., Evergreen Park police said they discovered a 21-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds in the back storage room of the Mariano’s on 95th Street, just east of California Avenue. The store employee was pronounced dead at the scene, while the alleged shooter fled the area.

Initially, police received calls of there being an active shooter at the Mariano’s, however, once at the scene, officers determined to be a domestic incident, and the public was not in danger.

According to Evergreen Park Police Chief Michael Saunders, shortly before the shooting, video surveillance showed the victim walking away from a man and into the storage room. Police identified the man as the victim’s boyfriend.

Saunders said the department was able to ascertain the suspect’s description and vehicle information from neighboring Oak Lawn police. The suspect had been involved in a prior domestic dispute with the victim while she was working at the Amazon Fresh Store, located at 95th and Pulaski.

Soon thereafter, local law enforcement provided Chicago police with the suspect’s description and the vehicle's license plate and were able to track it. The car and suspect were found on the North Side, Saunders said. Chicago police arrested the suspect and recovered a gun. Charges are pending.

Police would not provide the identity of the victim, noting her family had yet to be notified.
