EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Evanston's Land Use Commission Wednesday night rejected Northwestern's plan to host concerts at a new football stadium.

The commission members voted in favor of a new $800 million stadium, but a zoning change that would allow concerts was voted down 7 to 2.

The decision is advisory. The Evanston City Council could still give the okay to concerts and other events.

"First, there have been claims that the proposed concert sounds would be dangerous or cause negative health impacts to the surrounding community. That's just not true. I'd encourage the commission to step back, and, putting aside the experts put forth by the opposition and by Northwestern, use some common sense," Northwestern's attorney Katie Jahnke Dale said.

During a previous meeting a Northwestern representative said the stadium project would not be viable without the revenue from concerts.
