EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Evanston’s mayor is defending the city’s decision not to send out an alert after a deadly shooting last week and announcing more patrols.

Evanston Police will spend more time patrolling the lakefront and downtown while the city’s Youth and Young Adult Division will host nightly healing circles at community centers.

Mayor Daniel Biss announced the changes after what he calls a tragedy-a shooting at Clark Street Beach that killed Jacquis Irby, 18 of Skokie and wounded two 15 -year-olds.

Biss said in a newsletter he believes the city made the right call in not issuing a shelter in place order after determining the shooting was not random and not an active shooter incident.

Northwestern University did send out such an alert.
