CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Ready or not, here comes a dangerous heat wave.
Beginning Tuesday, the Chicago area will be hit with oppressive heat and humidity. The high temps combined with humidity Tuesday may make peak heat indices reach as high as 110 degrees, the National Weather Service said.
The hottest day will be Wednesday, the NWS predicts.
An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for Wednesday morning, extending until Thursday night for Illinois counties such as Cook, McHenry, Lake, DuPage, Will, Kane, Kendall, and Grundy.
High temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday could approach records set in 1947.
Wednesday’s highs are expected to be in the upper 90s during the day, the weather service said. Heat indices could make it feel like 115 degrees.
The brutal heat continues Thursday, with highs near 100 degrees and heat indices above 110, the weather service said.
The NWS warns that prolonged time outdoors could result in heat related illnesses such as a heat stroke.
The good news: it appears the heat will dissipate by Friday, as a storm front will cool temperatures into the 80s.
