How much is too much when it comes to “self-care?”

That’s what experts are cautioning the adopters of the latest TikTok trend that they’ll need to ask themselves before they embark on a day of “bed rotting.”

Bed rotting Is certainly safer than many other fads that have gone viral on the popular social media app. It simply involves relaxing, whatever form that may take for each individual, whether it be binge-watching television shows, scrolling social media or even just sleeping.

Certainly, the idea of self-care has grown more prevalent in society in recent years, but psychologists say too much relaxation can prove problematic, particularly if holing up in bed is in service of avoiding a certain activity rather than simply recharging one’s batteries.

If you feel physically or mentally unable to get out of bed, experts say that could be a deeper issue than simply needing a day of rest.

They also warn that too much bed rotting can lead to social isolation, a risk factor for anxiety and depression, so only rot in moderation.
