CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — North Michigan Avenue was the setting for a funeral procession this morning for a fallen firefighter, Chicago Fire Lt. Kevin Ward.
A procession brought Ward's body, who worked with Engine No. 98, from Chicago and Michigan Avenues three blocks north to Fourth Presbyterian Church.
It passed under a large American flag suspended from the ladders of two fire trucks. Hundreds of firefighters stood at attention.
"This is a line of duty death service, which is of the highest order with the fire department," said CFD spokesman Larry Langford. "All the pomp and circumstance, and recognition of the firefighter's career and his family, and reassuring them that we will always be there for them."
Ward died of injuries suffered fighting a fire on Aug. 11. He had been with the department for 27 years.
He was 59 years old.
