(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The family of Bears legend Steve “Mongo" McMichael are offering an update on his condition following his Thursday hospitalization.

A family spokesperson said McMichael appears to be responding to the antibiotics doctors have given him for a diagnosed urinary tract infection and is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days.

During his hospital stay, he will also be undergoing a procedure to remove fluid from his lungs, his family added.

His admission to the Intensive Care Unit Thursday night was the latest health setback for the 66-year-old. McMichael revealed in 2021 that he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Last week, the Bears great was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, an honor he had been waiting to receive for years.
