(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police are expected to speak Thursday about the person who’s been charged with the murder of off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy Raphael Wordlaw.
On Wednesday night, Wordlaw’s family gathered for a vigil.
Wordlaw was about to turn 32 when he was shot to death in what police said was an attempted robbery.
His sister Kendall spoke to CBS News Chicago during the vigil.
“He was very protective,” she said. “He was protective over me. He was protective over his sister and all his family. He loved us, and being his baby sister, I always felt protected.”
It was during the vigil that his friends and family learned police had a suspect.
His aunt, Rosie Henry, said she could “go to bed in peace.”
Wordlaw was at a gas station on the 500 block of East 67th Street at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday when, according to police, a man with a gun approached and attempted to rob him. They exchanged shots, and Wordlaw was hit in the chest. He later died.
