PALINFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The father of the 6-year-old Plainfield boy who was killed in an alleged hate crime, has filed a lawsuit.

Wadea Al-Fayoume and his mother Hanaan Shahin, 32 were stabbed repeatedly in their home on October 14th. According to the Will County Sheriff's Office, Joseph Czuba, their landlord, stabbed Shahin more than a dozen times and stabbed Wadea 26 times.

Prosecutors said Czuba attacked them, because of their Muslim faith and authorities have said that he targeted them, because of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. The family is Palestinian. Czuba pleaded not guilty to murder and hate crime charges.

Now, Wadea's father, Oday Al-Fayoume, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Czuba, Czuba's wife, and their property management company.

The suit claims there were signs of Czuba's intentions and somebody should have intervened.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October, there has been a rise in Islamophobia and antisemitism across the U.S.
