Taco giveaway turns into dip snit on South Side

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – It started with Taco Tuesday in West Englewood. It turned into a dip snit, for a bit.

Early in the week, Chef Michael Airhart and the organization he founded, Taste for the Homeless, gave food away at 63rd and Ashland.

Left over were several pallets of avocado dip. That’s hundreds of jars.

Ald. Ray Lopez (15th) says the food giveaway happened adjacent to his ward. He posted a picture on social media of the leftover jars, wondering who left it all there.

“I appreciate individuals who want to help communities, but I think there’s a right way and a wrong way,” he tells WBBM Newsradio.

“You need to make sure that if we’re doing an event where there are giveaways, whatever is excess we can’t just leave on property and hope that somebody else deals with it.”

Chef Airhart isn’t taking kindly to Lopez’s critique. He said he always intended to make sure people got the extra food -- it was not dumped.

“I would’ve thought he would’ve investigated first before he put that stuff on his Twitter and tried to badmouth people who are trying to fix his ward," Airhart said.

All's well that ends well? All of the dip had departed by Thursday evening.
