DYER, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 4-year-old boy from Dyer, Indiana received an award from the fire department for his fast-thinking when a neighbor’s house caught on fire.

The fire was burning on the outside of a home on the 500 block of Northgate Drive. Chase Llanes spotted the smoke and flames from across the street.

He alerted his grandmother, who called 911.

“Chase stayed very calm, cool and collected," the Dyer Fire Department wrote on a Facebook post.

His quick thinking led to an immediate response and lessened damage to the home.

“For his fast thinking, Chase was presented with our Civilian Award, which acknowledges a commendable act helping the department and furthering the rich tradition of friendly neighbors in this community."

Two weeks earlier, the 4 year-old, who attends Gingerbread Family Preschool in Crown Point, visited Crown Point Fire Rescue for a tour and a talk about fire prevention.

His grandmother, Teresa Chengary Coughlin said she's “so proud of him.” Chase is the first recipient of the award in the department’s history.
