(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The first snowfall of the season for the Chicago area lived up to the hype.

With a Winter Weather Advisory in place for much of the morning, the winter storm brought more than 2 inches of snow to both Midway and O'Hare Airports.

Snow reached the northern suburbs by the 8 a.m. hour and made its way to the city on south by 9 a.m. With wind gusts reaching 45 mph, the wind-whipped snow and slick roads made for dangers driving conditions throughout the area.

The snow was of the slushy variety and did wind up sticking sidewalk and roads.

At times this morning, the snow came down at a rate of almost an inch per hour.

The storm's intensity has now lessened, and, as the temps rise, the National Weather Service (NWS) expects the precipitation to eventually become rain.

It will however remain quite windy throughout the afternoon, with gusts reaching as high as 50 mph.

By the evening, the rain and wind will let up.

AccuWeather Meteorologist John Feerick told WBBM that temperatures are expected to rise throughout the weekend, with temps getting back into the 50s by Sunday.
