Florida man stole $70K worth of tools then led Indiana police on two-state chase: Sheriff

HOBART, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Police arrested a man Monday suspected of stealing $75,000 worth of tools from Hobart while they continue to look for his accomplice.

Before police arrested the 31-year-old Florida man, the Lake County Indiana Sheriff said he was a passenger in a U-Haul that led police on a chase from Hobart to Englewood.

The department sayid it joined the pursuit after police reported the van left a burglary at a tool rental shop at around 2 a.m. After a chase along I-80/94, officers saw two people get out near 71st and Perry and caught the passenger about a block away.

Before Illinois troopers took him to jail, Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said officers found him carrying a bag of $10,000 in cash as well as the stolen tools in the van.

Police continue to look for the driver.
