Monarch butterflies are starting to head south for the winter.

An event in Lincoln Park this weekend gives people a chance to see how conservationists track their migration.

Before they begin the 2,000-mile trek to Mexico, some Monarch butterflies at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum are tagged.

Program development specialist Jeff Wolfthal says an entomologist puts a small white sticker on one of their wings.

It’s not a tracking device. It simply has information about where the butterfly emigrated from.

Guests can learn about monarchs at the nature museum’s Flutter into Fall event on Saturday 10am-2pm.
