COOK COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A south suburban mayor is facing prison after being found guilty in an embezzlement case.

Citing a mountain of evidence, a judge Monday found Ford Heights Mayor Charles Griffin guilty of official misconduct and theft of between $10,000 and $100,000.

He was initially charged in 2018 and accused of using nearly $150,000 of village funds on personal purchases at numerous stores and restaurants between 2014 and 2017.

According to prosecutors, Griffin had statements sent to his home in hopes of keeping the purchases private.

He initially was mayor from 2009 to 2017 before he lost to Annie Coulter. She first reported the financial irregularities.

Still, Griffin was reelected in 2021.

He will be sentenced next month.
