(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Former DePaul University men’s basketball head coach Joey Meyer died Friday at the age of 74, the university’s athletic department announced.
Myers, a 1971 DePaul alum, died surrounded by his family. A public memorial service is being planned, the department said in a statement posted online. A cause of death was not given.
Meyer was a player and then an assistant coach under his father, the legendary Ray Meyer, who led the Blue Demons for more than 40 seasons.
When the elder Meyer retired, his son became head coach in 1984. Joey Meyer took DePaul to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in his 13 seasons, including back-to-back Sweet Sixteens in the mid-1980s. He was named Coach of the Year 1987.
DePaul parted ways with Meyer after a disappointing season in 1997, and he later worked in professional basketball and broadcasting.
All told, Joey Meyer spent 30 years at DePaul as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
