(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Voters in four Chicago area communities have voted not to give their local governments “home rule” powers.
By wide percentages, the voters in Lyons, Lakemoor, Wauconda and Bull Valley have indicated they do not want their villages to be home rule.
Communities that have more than 25,000 residents are automatically given those powers to levy certain kinds of taxes as well as incur debt.
Those with lower populations can become home-rule governments if voters allow it. While voters can choose to give their local governments home rule powers, they can also take away those powers via the ballot.
The Illinois Municipal League says there are 221 home-rule communities in the state.
