CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Montrose Harbor is no longer a safe harbor for free parking.
Some people have been coming here for years to fish or just to walk.
But now, there is no more free parking on some roads, such as Montrose Harbor Drive.
“I don’t like it. I’m very disappointed because before it was my favorite place,” one retiree told WBBM Newsradio Thursday.
Amy Gillespie, the general manager of the Dock at Montrose Harbor, said she hopes the paid parking will free up some spaces for customers on the weekends.
“It’s going to cost our employees a lot of money to park here,” she added. “Most of them we do try to encourage to bike. But myself, I do drive.
“I live in Portage Park and I come all the way here. I’m here for 10 to 12 hours sometimes. So it’s going to be costly.”
One somewhat positive note, at least for taxpayers. Remember that parking deal where the city sold its parking soul to investors in 2008? This time, the city will get to collect money on all the new metered spots.
