Frostbite can occur within minutes, physician reminds Chicagoans amid cold snap

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The brutally cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills continue in Chicago, and going outside can be downright painful, in more ways than one.

Dr. Michael Gottlieb of Rush Medical Center said it's easy to forget how to dress in arctic temperatures, especially after a few milder winters.

He says we may think we know how to deal with January weather, but frostbite only takes a few minutes. Cases in the ER always increase this time of year because people don't adjust their habits during the extreme cold.

Although some types of gloves are designed for people who use their phones outside, Dr. Gottlieb said keeping hands fully covered up is the best strategy in subzero temperatures.

Signs of frostbite include pain, redness, blisters and numbness.
