CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — To mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and honor the first responders from that day, a special fundraising event takes place Saturday morning at Soldier Field.

People will climb 2,200 steps in the stands of Soldier Field, the amount of steps some New York City firefighters reached before the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

Laura Haiden of the Glenside Fire Protection District in the west suburban Glendale Heights is coordinating the Soldier Field event, one of dozens around the country on Saturday.

"The climbers themselves will be climbing not only the 100 level, but they'll also be able to go up to the second and third levels of Soldier Field in order to get the equivalent number of steps that equate to that climb within the towers themselves," Haiden told WBBM Newsradio.

The goal of the Soldier Field event is to raise at least $50,000 for the families of New York City firefighters who died because of 9/11 as well as Illinois firefighters lost in the line of duty.
