GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Northwest Indiana little league team is heading to the state championships next week. The business community in Gary and beyond is helping to make it a reality, but they could use your help, too.
The Calumet Region Sr. League All-Stars, 14-to-16-year olds, will remember this for a lifetime, says their coach, Earmon “Pooch” Hill.
"It's the first time for us, as our little league. It's been a long time since somebody from this area, this region has been there," Hill said. "It means a lot for us to go and represent the region. It means a great deal for these kids, because baseball is not as prevalent around here as it used to be. So for us to make it to the state championship, it's really a big deal for them...
"We want to make this something they remember for a lifetime...a lot of them never played on a stage that big."
Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said this is a dream opportunity. He’s putting up $1,000 for their trip and he’s urging others to do the same.
US Steel and the minor league team, the SouthShore Railcats, pledged $1,500.
