GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city of Gary is continuing a partnership with the Indiana State Police designed to improve the police department.
Gary Mayor Jerome Prince brought in the State Police in April to evaluate operations and training, which was essentially a re-structuring.
A State Police Major has been working out of the Gary PD. 90 days later, the mayor says, the partnership is making progress.
"We forged a partnership with an eye towards restructuring administratively, but also looking for opportunities to enhance our tactical side of operations."
One initiative that has come out of the partnership is called “Operation Safe Zone,” connecting private security cameras to the police department, which can monitor the camera feeds in real-time.
"Our goal was never been to come in here and turn that Gary police department of the state police," said State Police Supt. Doug Carter.
"Our hope was to come in and help build a foundation for which the city of Gary will be the place to go... not the place to avoid."
