(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gary’s mayor said his administration is already working on recommended changes to his city's police department, which were just announced by a reform commission.
Mayor Jerome Prince on Wednesday said he agrees with the panel’s recommendations. They include increasing transparency, reducing the need for deadly force, training officers to recognize and address mental health issues and making the police department more diverse.
Gary Police Chief Brian Evans said some of the reforms, such as policy changes and officer training, can be completed in months.
Other recommendations, such as deploying officer body cams, will take longer to implement because of the costs involved, he added.
