GARY, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Mayor of Gary has chosen a new Interim Police Chief, the latest among about a dozen who have led the department over the past decade.

The new chief is taking a leave from his job as a Major with the State Police and Jerry Williams said the plan is to do what he called “a hard reset.”

Williams was brought into the department last April by Mayor Jerome Prince to overhaul the department.

"What we tried to do is come in here and holistically look at the police department and take a deep dive into every aspect from wall to wall, you name it," Prince said. "We touched it."

There was some push-back along the way, but Prince said his decision is not a slight to anyone.

Williams replaces Chief Brian Evans, who took the job temporarily in 2020 and while it’s expected to be temporary for Williams, until July, he’s not opposed to staying.

He started his police career in Gary more than 30 years ago.
