(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A measure that would allow multiple-occupancy public restrooms to be labeled gender-neutral has passed in the Illinois House.

The vote was close. With 60 votes for the measure and 40 opposed, the bill had just enough to pass. House Bill 1286 will now move to the state Senate.

It would amend the Equitable Restroom Act of 2019, which required all single-occupancy public restrooms to be available to all genders.

The amendment would only allow restrooms with two or more toilets to be available to all.

The bill is not specific to schools, though it allows for any multiple-occupancy restroom to be identified as an all-gender facility.

Restroom preference has become a recent hot issue focusing on culture and gender.
