(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Many of Generation X - the group known for its self-reliance - are frequently lonely, according to a recent survey by the Evanston-based Mather Institute.

Top concerns for those born between 1965 and 1980 are money, memory and isolation.

"This may be a reflection of their current experiences," explained Jennifer Smith, Vice-President of the Maher Institute.

"We found that a little under a third of Gen Xers were lonely at least some of the time and 81% were stressed about their finances at least some of the time."

Smith tells WBBM that’s compared to boomers’ worries about keeping their independence. More than half of Gen Xers said they’re prepared to support their children financially in the short-term, but only one in three are ready for their parents' needs.

The survey also found some positive things.

"One out of five them were dissatisfied with their work life balance, so we did interpret that as a sign that gen x is prioritizing their work life balance more than previous generations," Smith said.

The results are the first in a five-year series by the group that runs senior living facilities in Evanston and Wilmette and other locations. Smith said they hope it will help employers and communities shape resources and programs for the forgotten generation.
