CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some Glenview residents protesting a plan to kill beavers causing damage to trees appear to have convinced a homeowner's association to hold off, for now.
The residents of Concord at the Glenn formed a Facebook group: Glenview Residents Against Drowning Beavers in Underwater Traps! More than 600 people have joined.
Additionally, nearly 2,500 people have signed an online petition demanding that at the very least they be humanely trapped and relocated.
Residents have protested with signs reading “I give a Dam.”
Some spoke to CBS 2.
Reporter: You are upset about this?
“Yes, I'm upset. I’m very upset,” said Todd Stern, who lives at the Concord at the Glenn in suburban Glenview. “They are actually putting traps under the water to capture the beavers and drown them, which I think is absolutely horrible.”
According to CBS 2, Cagan Management sent out a notice saying the beavers, considered a nuisance to some, would be removed from the ponds this week.
“Very deceiving, no mention of killing them,” Stern said.
“It’s not a humane way to deal with pests,” Rachel Siegel added. “It’s a slow death.
“They are doing a little damage to trees...but they really aren’t harming anyone."
“I don’t see any damage being done by two beavers that merits them being killed for it,” said resident Jackie Barrett.
For now, the beavers’ fate is unclear, the Tribune reported. The Concord at the Glen homeowners association board and its management company, Cagan Management Group, said future action is on pause.
“Concord at the Glen homeowners association and its board of directors is continuing their due diligence in this matter and after thorough research and careful consideration a decision will be made,” the board said in a statement. “At this time, any planned action has been postponed.”
Cagan supports the humane treatment of wildlife, the company said in a separate statement.
“We trust that after the HOA’s Board of Directors research and investigation into all possible options is complete, an amicable solution will be presented and this situation will be resolved in an ethical manner,” the statement read.
