Group has recommendations to make Illinois roads safer

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A traffic safety organization says there are measures Illinois can take to reduce the number of deaths on Illinois roads, but it would mean changing some laws.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety recommends raising the minimum age for learner’s permits and driver’s licenses and restricting who can be in the car with young drivers, in addition to limiting the hours young drivers can be on the road.

DePaul University Professor Joe Schwieterman said people are driving more aggressively.

“One thing that those who look at the data are struck by is how many young people are in accidents, just getting their license with friends in the car and bad decisions are made by 16-, 17-year-olds,” he said.

Illinois is one of 34 states to receive a yellow or caution rating from the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety.
