(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A conservation group in Lake Zurich is hoping to turn their neighbors into bounty hunters by offering cash to remove invasive buckthorn from their personal properties in that northwest suburb.

The Ancient Oaks Foundation is offering $5 dollars a stump for large trees and two dollars for smaller ones, for a total of up to $150 per household, for removing buckthorn from their own properties.

The Daily Herald reports since launching the bounty in the fall, the non-profit has paid out $1,000.

Interested Lake Zurich residents must register with the group before they can get paid for taking out buckthorn, which can grow up to 22 feet tall.

It crowds out native plants and spreads its seed through berries that birds eat and then pass through.
