CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Asian-American group wants Chicago police to investigate a weekend car incident in the Logan Square neighborhood as a hate crime.

People were enjoying themselves on a grassy area in the 2900 block of West Logan Boulevard Saturday evening when a vehicle came diving toward them.

A witness told the Chicago Tribune a man shouted anti-Asian comments and then drove a red pickup truck onto the grassy area and towards the crowd.

One woman was hit and a couple of other people suffered injuries.

Police said the man was arrested and the charges are pending but Water Reclamation Commissioner Josina Morita and the Asian American Caucus want a hate crime investigation.

Morita said there needs to be immediate action by police to combat the rise in anti-Asian hate over the past year.
