(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Republican gubernatorial hopefuls who attended a candidates forum over the weekend voiced opposition to abortion, a topic that is likely to be a major issue in the upcoming election.

During a forum hosted by the St. Clair County Republican Party, several of the GOP candidates were asked to define their stances.

Venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan said the Illinois status of being an abortion sanctuary is “immoral.”

“Who is going to stand up for unborn children in the state of Illinois?” he said. “We have late-term, partial birth abortions, taxpayer-funded abortions with no parental notification. It's J.B. Pritzker's economic development plan to try to bring people into Illinois, the oasis of abortions. This is wrong and is immoral.”

State Sen. Darren Bailey said making abortion illegal isn’t the only answer. He said the goal is to make abortion “unnecessary” and his administration would team up with organizations and churches to find solutions.

“Illinois will indeed be a showcase state for the entire nation as we begin to truly respect and support life, as God intends,” Bailey said.

Aligning with other challengers who praised abortion alternatives, businessman Gary Rabine noted that he is part of an adoptive family.

“We adopted our fourth child. We've helped many people adopt. We believe that adoption is a solution,” he said.

Former state legislator Paul Schimpf added that a pro-life GOP candidate should come standard, “like having four tires on your car.”

And lawyer and DePaul alum Max Solomon cited a Bible verse and said he believes life begins before conception.

The only GOP gubernatorial candidate who didn’t appear at the forum was Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin. He has said he opposes abortion except in the cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at stake.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to reverse Roe v Wade later this year. Some state governments will outlaw abortion outright, if that occurs.
