CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The primary battle for the Illinois Senate seat in the 20th district has gone to Graciela Guzman, who was back for her "second shot" at the post.

The first thing that comes to Guzman's mind is gratitude.

"I am incredibly proud of what we have built in the last decade in the northwest-the strength of our progressive movement and getting to go to Springfield to fight for a people's agenda that puts working class families first."

Guzman beat incumbent Natalie Toro, who was appointed to the seat in the summer after Cristina Pacione-Zayas resigned to join Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration.

She said she thinks it's her authencity that helped her come out on top this time.

"I think what we see is energy-energy that wants to lift up affordable housing and healthcare for all people and human rights and do it from an authentic place."

One of Guzman's supporters said at her election party Tuesday night that it's refreshing to see residents use their voices to vote for someone who isn't just the incumbent.

"You should be voting for people based on what they believe in, based on their values, based on what issues they want to tackle, not because they were in that seat a year prior."

Guzman added that she is looking forward to bringing the fight for working class people from the 20th district to the state capitol.
